My '81 required one. I don't believe the exhaust manifold changed until '87 when they went to EFI, so I would think yours would be the same.
However, looking on RockAuto, O'Reilly, and SummitRacing, they only list them for up to an '84, so maybe they changed it? Are you thinking you need one?
Yes, I went to Autozone this morning and the guy told me more or less the same thing...he had no listing for an 85. He ended-up selling me one for an for a 62-84 6-300 (less then $2). There seems to be a small exhaust leak where the gasket does/should go.
I would guess the best would be to ask a muffler shop. They must have a tool to flare the end.
On the other hand, Walker brand makes replacement exhaust pipes and mufflers for our trucks and they are available at most automotive parts houses. The only problem I can see with this is that most likely, the replacement headpipe will come with a catalytic convertor, which you may not need.
