about 8 months ago i had my exhaust manifolds redone at a reputable shop. my intake gasket was leaking and my manifolds had leaks as well, so i figured id do everything right. i bought brand new ford exhaust manis and the mr gasket intake/exhaust combo gasket. however, the other day my truck developed an exhaust leak at the manifold so i brought it back to the shop that did it. he said the gasket is blown and everything needs to be done all over again. he said that since my motor has alot of mileage (180k) the valves dont seat as well anymore, causing much higher exhaust temps, thus blowing out the gasket. regardless, my truck sounds like a pos and i need to fix it. should i get another mr gasket combo gasket? what number was it again? sorry for the long post.
It's probably a lot more of a pita with EFI, but every time I've retightened the header bolts after an engine has been run once and cooled down they *needed* to be retightened. Cheap insurance.
yeah its a total pita on these motors, that's why i had somebody else do it. anyway, i have my own theories as to why the gasket failed. 1. possibly a clogged cat. i have 1 cat left on my truck however i don't notice a loss in power. 2. i break motor mounts constantly on this thing. maybe when the engine dances from the broken mounts, the gasket wore out prematurely.
If you want to buy a complete OEM Y-pipe with hollow cats and that has been welded back together from pieces, I can help you out.
Getting to the bolts on the EFIs is such a PITA. I tried every combination of short and long sockets, 3-8 and 0.5 drive, u-joints, and extensions and there is no way to do it without going the long way around
I don't think that loose motor mounts would cause the manifolds to move if the bolts were properly torqued. Don't think a Motorcraft gasket would hurt either.
I think your mechanic's explanation seems a bit fishy, you should check to see if the manifolds are warped, it shouldn't just be blowing gaskets like that, even on an old motor. Check the side of the head too while your at it.
when i do them over again at the shop, the guy is gonna have the manifolds' decking checked and he will mill them if needed. i didnt think about the possibility of checking the side of the head for warping.
Just like the Baron says, use the Mr Gasket 260 I/E gasket set. The stock gasket is thinner, and works fine for stock setup, but the 260 is the best one.
