Intake question

Hi all,
Got a crate motor. (86 4.9) new intake, new exhaust etc..
Instructions on the motor said to use their 2 piece intake / exhaust gaskets. So I did. I have also heard other stories. Like to not use an exhaust gasket at all.

I just did what they said to do and I only torqued the bolts once.
I guess I was supposed to re-torque them after heatin em up. It leaks now.

Was that the big mistake or is that gasket stacking method they recommend wrong?

I found a good picture of the same gasket setup here:

no sure about the carb'd engines, but for the 89 big six in my bronco when i bought the gasket set for it that gasket was one piece. however it has holes for the extra bolts in the efi manifolds. but I think that a one piece gasket would work better than juggling two.

you could try re-torquing them if the leak is minor, i don't agree much about not running the exhaust gasket since the intake and exhaust are bolted to each other, seems to be a good way to get both exhaust and vacuum leaks.

The one piece exhaust manifolds on mid-'80s 300s all leak and work themselves loose. You can use EFI manifolds, a pair of 3-into-1s with a little fiddling, and be pretty much done with the exhaust manifold nonsense. If you think that might be for you, there are a couple of threads on here about that.
