Good Afternoon,
After a little research, I decided to pull out the distributor on my 1993 F150 4.9L straight 6. The problem I was having was the distributor cap kept getting cracked (3 of them and truck would turn over but not run) and I thought the bearing was bad. Well the distributor really seems to be tight(it was really packed up with grease, I'll flush the engine later). Later I found out the it could have simply been the pickup coil. Could the pickup coil crack the distributor cap? I did clean out the fuel injector and pulled the map sensor and cleaned it(everything was REALLY nasty). I haven't put the distributor back in to test anything. If anyone has an answer PLEASE let me know.
Cheap caps? incorrect cap / rotor combination, rotor to long? even that usually just cuts a grove pushing cap away as it spins. What type hold down does the 300 6 use, screws or the spring clips like say the V8's use?
Perhaps a picture or two of the damage done to the cap? showing how it cracked and where in relation to other components under the hood that side?
Myself haven't had a 300 6 since 81 f250 so not familiar with the under hood layout this generation...even so go as far to doubt it anyway but will ask regardless......
Gotta busted motor mount or two? separated to point allowing motor to rotate far enough while under load in gear to allow distributor roll far enough hit something cracking the cap? anything close enough and solid enough do so?
You should request a mod to remove your other thread, it is useless. Sometimes it takes time before getting any reply, might be not enough people read it yet and or are taking little time to think about it.
yeah, some pics might help ... any possibility that you are tightening it down too much...if its the screw-on type ... any foreign matter where the cap sits ...dang laptop doesnt let me use question marks !
Thank You...at first thought the cap might be an issue(nope) the rotor button correct(yes) the crack wouldn't show in a picture(hair-line) but certainly a problem. The motor was turning over but not running when this happened, had plenty of cranking power but just would run. The motor mounts are in good shape and there's enough space even if the motor was just laying there not to damage the distributor cap. Could the pick-up coil be a problem and have caused my problem originally? Appreciate your input.
Well ya don't have to get nasty. Sorry for being impatience, day off and trying to cram several chores into a short time. If I knew everything we wouldn't be having his conversation and would appreciate any advise that might help me problem solve my issues and get my truck up and running.
p.s. I'm Mrs. Bud, Bud!
Really strange issue... Never heard of anything like that happening over and over. Mismatched parts? If I were having the issue, I'd probably just replace the whole distributor, cap, rotor, and wires with a whole new set. That way all of those parts can be eliminated as the issue, and you know all of the parts are the correct ones to be used together. I hate to throw parts at issues, but I'd put my money on that eliminating this issue that could leave you stranded at any time it seems.
Thanks BigBlock...It's been a labor of love with this damn truck and replacing everything is the best advise. You're right and being left on the side of the road really stinks! Will let ya'll know how it goes.
Sorry MRS. bud. Glad you got the adviCe you needed. It's frustrating when people who don't contribute get testy. These people aren't your personal mechanics at your beckoning call. Just saying...
Where exactly was it cracking? In the center. Or opening up like a pie cut? Check the linear travel of the shaft in the housing. A v8 will push the shaft upwards (when running) due to the helical gears involved. Not sure about a six as I believe the cam spins backwards due to design. Just a thought
