F-sd 4x4 conversion

I haven't been on here as much as I'd like, so I figured I'd share the current project I am working on. I am helping my buddy turn his 96 f-superduty dump flatbed into a 4x4.

We started with removing the mono beam front axle and leafsprings
<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1744_zpsd54b767d.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1744_zpsd54b767d.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1744_zpsd54b767d.jpg"/></a>

The factory 450 springs have a hell of an arch to them
<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1770_zps35d983ec.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1770_zps35d983ec.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1770_zps35d983ec.jpg"/></a>

We put springs out of an f350 in. It has new bushings. Since the bolts are bigger on the 450, the rear bushing on the spring had to be one for the 450, not a 250/350. Some brackets and bump stops had to be taken off as well. The engine crossmember didn't have holes for the track bar so those had to drilled also.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1751_zpsc881a95a.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1751_zpsc881a95a.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1751_zpsc881a95a.jpg"/></a>

Got the dana 60 put in place and bolted up followed by the t-case and 350 front shaft.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1756_zpsd0eb6086.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1756_zpsd0eb6086.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1756_zpsd0eb6086.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1769_zps71218052.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1769_zps71218052.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1769_zps71218052.jpg"/></a>

I had some 8 to 10 lug dually adapters machined so we could run the correct wheels.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/0206142030a_zpsccc1ecae.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/0206142030a_zpsccc1ecae.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 0206142030a_zpsccc1ecae.jpg"/></a>

The truck looks good, sits a bit higher than before. I have seen pictures where there is a d60 under the factory 450 super arched springs, and that looks ridiculous.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1797_zpsc30b729d.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1797_zpsc30b729d.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1797_zpsc30b729d.jpg"/></a>

On to the back. The front was 410 and the rear d80 is 4.63 or what not, so that is getting changed to 4.10, hopefully that will help how thirsty it is going down the highway. While we are working on the rear end, rotors and pads are getting replaced.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1861_zps210e6627.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1861_zps210e6627.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1861_zps210e6627.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1863_zps9070d2bb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1863_zps9070d2bb.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1863_zps9070d2bb.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1877_zps5ec1df5e.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1877_zps5ec1df5e.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1877_zps5ec1df5e.jpg"/></a>

The original 2 piece rear shaft is too long. The carrier bearing was right where the flange on the t-case is. We picked up a 350 rclb 1 piece shaft. it needed to be shortened, and while that was happening we had the larger yoke from the 450 shaft put on the 350 shaft.

<a href="http://s1081.photobucket.com/user/coreylasalle/media/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1860_zpsb0c605a4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1081.photobucket.com/albums/j359/coreylasalle/fte/Joshs%20F-sd/NCM_1860_zpsb0c605a4.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo NCM_1860_zpsb0c605a4.jpg"/></a>

The plan is to have the 4.10 gears in tonight and the truck driving tomorrow.

I would love to do this with my '97 F-Super, but with a 5 speed I haven't figured out what to do with the parking brake once the t-case is installed.

Is your trans auto or 5 spd?

Great job! Looks like u r having lots of fun. I used to work for Kunkel Ambulance as a medic in Utica for a few years. Got tired of the cold and snow and moved to NC. This morning it's 16* and we have 2 inches of snow! LOL

It is an auto, so the parking break isn't as important, but it still needs one so it can pass NYS inspection. I am not quite sure what the plan is for that yet. I while back I recall reading about someone making or using a go kart rotor and putting it between the t-case flange and the drive shaft. Then they used a cable operated caliper and made custom brackets to mount it. I haven't given this too much thought yet though.

Looks good! There was one on Ebay the other day that had the conversion done by Quigley. He claimed to have a Dana 70 front axle on it.

I have seen a couple here and there for sale, not many though. Some with the d70, others with 8 to 10 dually adapters.

TJC, That was the original plan. But my buddy does sometimes have a fair amount of weight on the truck, so he decided to keep the 80. The 15000 gvw is nice to have. Though it would make the parking break ordeal a lot easier to use a 10.25

All said and done they came out good, but it took a little longer than I hoped, and a bunch of going back and forth figuring stuff out. If you reference them to mine, they should have it all figured out to build an additional set.

Thanks Bill!

Last night we got the 410s in the rear and all set up and ready to roll. Filled it up with gear oil, bolted in the rear shaft and took a test drive to the gas station and around the field in some snow. The 4x4 works good and it goes down the road nice. A little rough on the bumps, but not bad. The double cardone joint will probably need attention by next winter as well.

so there really are 4.10 R&P for the dana 80.how much did those 8 to 10 lug adapters set ya back if you don't mind?
looking forward to see what you come up with for an emergency brake.

she sure looks good with a front axle sitting under it.kinda wish you showed more details of it's instal though.

Could you use a dana 80 out of a dodge? That way you have the big rear end and e brake.
