Ok, so I've been reading for days on this and I haven't found an exact answer.
I understand that I need the new style "spider pipe" or "Y pipe"... whatever you want to call the odd monstrosity that it is.
I'm obviously going to need the turbo as well, but my big question is if I can just put the cold side housing off the newer turbo on to the E99 turbo? I'd prefer to do that, if possible so I don't have to go through all the hassle of removing the whole turbo. Assuming the Garrett is built similarly to the Holsett (which I've rebuilt several of) it would be much easier to just r2 the cold side of the turbo.
Anything else I need? Will the same tubing match up?
Thanks in advance guys. There's so much info on this website, it's amazing.
The other reason being able to swap the cold side would be great is then I could just buy a siezed or high mileage turbo and not worry about it. Since I'm a cheap basterd, being able to do this would make me a very happy man.
No you can't. The new style turbo mounts higher then the early turbo so you have to change that then I guess you could change the cold side of the turbo completely but why not use the new turbo. Guts are the same in both except the cold side WW but you need the taller mount for the turbo it self. Your also going 2" to 3" on the pleniums. Just go the the wrecking yard and buy the complete set up for cheap, then rebuild the turbo.

I was reading that the early 99 had the "wicked wheel" already in it, and I've only got 100k on this turbo, so... swapping cold side housings just seems easier.
I understand that the new style sits higher. Is that a requirement to make the new spider pipe fit?
Wrecking yards were a bust so far. I checked 2. One had nothing, the other wanted a gold bar for everything they had. $150 for a turbo with 300k on it seems absurdly high to me. No spider pipes anywhere in 5 different trucks.
I'd probably have a lot fewer questions if I got to see the newer style up close and tear into it... stupid wrecking yards.
The pedestal is higher on the late 99+. One, or maybe both - I don't remember for sure - of the exhaust up pipes is also a different length. I have both sets, and I'll try to check them today. The compressor housing and back plate will swap between the turbos, and is a direct fit. I just rebuilt my early 99 turbo and put the housing from the late 99 onto it for my engine swap.
If you can get the late 99 turbo and get them to include the pedestal for $150, that would probably make it worth it. You would still need the spider, plenums and boots.

Pika CHOOOO!!! Thanks so much for that information. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear.
Now, I notice you said get the housing from the late 99 specificially. From what I understand, 99.5-03 turbos are the same, yes?
