I am considering getting a new turbo and was hoping for some advice my goal is a reliable daily driver that will be used to tow,but not on a daily basis.I have a 6637 intake,160/100 casserly injectors, have a 6.0 intercooler that will go in at the same time,as well as a 4" mbrp exhaust,it is an early 99 and i was considering riffraff's late conversion and garrett 38r or a t-4 setup but not sure which turbo to mate with it.Any advice or experience with either is appreciated
I haven't done any turbo upgrades but I have seen a lot of guys go with the 38R.
Since you have already looked at Riffraff's for the turbo, contact Cliff there. He has always been more than helpful with information on the stuff he sells. Many of us on here including me have had him on the phone for one reason or another and he is always willing to help out.
With the e99 like me, you have to upgrade either way. You could try one of the updated wheels and see if that gives you enough. I got the updated parts from a friend so the 38R was the cheap route if I go there. If you change motors you mitt find the late motor so find out what you have first. Or are you going to fix that one?
Either route you will need to get all new boots, riffraff billet plenums at a minimum. Read up on Tuglys adventures if you have not already. You will have the same setup as him and he had a chain reaction when doing all of this.
Since you have an E99, I would say take this opportunity to switch to a better turbo mount option. The H2E with Hypermax mount kit would be a great route for you. It will also be very similar in price to the 38R with all of the later model parts. You will also have more turbo options when switching to this style of mount. If you want to see the kit I am talking about, check it out HERE.
If I hadn't already completely redone my whole exhaust before upgrading the turbo, I would likely have gone to the T4 to open my options for serviceable turbos.
And yes... my intake plenums protested the additional boost. The billet plenums are such a nice upgrade, I have high confidence in the O-ring seal - as oppose to RTV.
HEY Tugly, which turbo would you have gotten if you went T-4,i was on irate diesel site and they have several options not sure which one would be appropriate,i have casserly 160/100 reman injectors and it will be going on a ford reman motor
I personally would go with the S366 kit and no you don't need a waste gate with those injectors. The best thing to do would be to call Irate and talk to them about what you have and what you want to do with it.
I missed this the other day. I've heard a lot of great things about the S366 and I'm sure I would have researched it... if the option was open to me. Since bellowed ups were one of the very first mods to the truck, that put me out of the T4 business before I started PMS.
The Hypermax T-4 mount with the H2e will use donuts. Irates T-4 kit with bellows will not. I would get the billet wheel at the same time. Money well spent IMO.
My H2e has 50k miles with no leaks at the donuts. In my opinion high drive pressure is a major factor in the donuts leaking. The H2e has low drive pressure.

That's the same reason I did not go with a T4. I already had bellowed uppies when my stock turbo failed so I went with a 38R.
