I have read and read and read on this topic and am nowhere near an answer. I have a 2000 F-150 5.4 SCab 4x4. I have to clean this engine to determine some oil leak issues I will be posting about next and just because it is still caked in mud from offroading 6 months ago.
Do I just mask off what the owners manual says, or should I cover the cop and everything else electrical. Just hose or crappy electric pressure washer?
Cheap walmart engine degreaser is the only thing I am going to use cleaner wise as I already have some for a reason I can't recall.
Am I in for issues with the cops if I clean. I really don't want to start replacing them. Should I bag them off?
Engines get wet all the time. I'd take it to a local car wash and spray it down with the wand on the lower pressure setting. I did it all the time with my old truck.
Well, I went ahead and sprayed with low pressure water hose and engine degreaser. It still doesn't look great, but it looks more respectable. I will probably just get the who,e truck detailed, inside, outside, and engine when spring rolls around. That way it'll be used car dealer shiny. Also I'll have someone else to blame if someone messes up something. Below are the pics of how I crappily masked it and what it looked like when finished. I also used the jet sprayer on the hose to spray the underside where th oil is leaking.
