I made this little try out of a piece of aluminum, the side closest to you slides under the filter housing. The notch by my hand is to clear the FIW pigtail. I just slipped this under the fuel pump and it stayed in place by it's self. I was able to remove the water drain plug and filter with this tray in place, then all the diesel fuel ran down the slope and collected to one side ( notice the roll on the far end) and right into the container. The threads on the plug and cap were a little hard to undo so I cleaned up the threads on the plug on my wire wheel on my bench grinder and the ones on the cap with a rag. Then I squirted them with W-D 40 and they reinstalled smooth as silk. I didn't get one drop of Diesel on my frame rail and no Diesel in my armpit. Yaaaaaa !!!!!!!

I put on the aftermarket knurled **** & it has a 'T' on the end to keep it from falling out. This allows it to hang out at an angle that causes the fuel to not run onto the frame rail & front drive shaft. For $20 forever more you don't have to play with a piece of tin.
I used tin foil before & it OK but had a hell of a time getting getting the stock plug out with the drive shaft in the way.
I don't have a 4x4 so I'm not sure about the clearance for this idea but it worked for my truck. Went to Home Depot bought a sheet rock mud tray, the cheep one, put it up under the drain plug put a jack stand under it pulled the plug let it drain completely, angled the tray up under the filter cap and pump aided with the jack stand (as that elusive 3rd hand you need) took the cap off pulled the filter out set it in the tray let the little bit of fuel drain out into the tray. Didn't spill a drop had a ready place for the filter to go. The tray was big enough to hold all of the fuel that drained out. I measured it at the time IIRC it ended up to be around about a cup full.
Bravo Tim!
This is the exact piece I was going to fabricate this summer, but you beat me to it.
Now, to earn your place amongst the FTE immortals, get out your tape and give us the measurements on that bad boy so our wives will quit throwing out our stinky shirts.

Loubell, I have always considered myself an expert when it comes to Buttering Up my Wife, but you my man have taken the Art to a level I did not know existed.(lol)
The measurements are =
8" wide
1 1/2" vertical leg with a 1"x 2" notch taken put
9" horizontal leg
I have a 2 wheel drive so 4 wheelers should fab. one out of cardboard first to check fitment.
