I changed my fuel filter the other day, and since ,truck will not act right.Started sputtering going down the road and cut off and would not start .Seemed like air in the fuel line. Finally got it restarted only to die again.Checked the hfcm filter and found the o-ring pinched and broke ,reinstalled hfcm filter with no o-ringand now it runs fine but after sitting awhile it spins a LONG time before starting like it has to reprime.Could I be losing fuel line pressure from not having o-ring in place ?If so where do iget an o-ring ,my filters didnot come with any ,by the way I changed the top fuel filter on the engine2days before and had no problems .HELP ANYONE!!! Thanks TIM B.
Pretty much ditto for me, I self installed filters for first diesel fuel bath, chicks dig it?, I broke the o-ring unknowingly with same symptomology you describe. Dealership reinstalled for $50. Person engineering such placement is a commie. I think you have to get that o-ring back in there...make sure you wear full protective clothing due to probable diesel fuel shower
Thanks, Medicone thats what I figured, just wanted to be sure .I have a scmt installed for about a week now, wanted to make sure something wasnt up with it. Thanks again ,I love this site!!!!
Do a search for our homemade solutions to preventing the diesel bath....
Get two plastic 1 liter coke bottle... cut the top down the center about 3 or 4 inches than quarter it to make a scoop that will stick above the drain slot and still catch the fuel coming out into the bottle !
reason I say two is so you can catch the plug in the first - swap it out reall quick with the second and fish the plug out so it's ready to stop the fuel flow when you feel you need to.... (mine never stop seeping out... )
NO fuel on me !!!!
NOW - before you dispose of the fuel - remember you have your plug in there !!!
And I suspect you don't have to drain it monthly like they suggest...
I've not in about 20K miles and mine runs fine....
They even have a water in fuel light on the dash to tell u when it's time....
Why would they have that if it didn't work ?
Change both your filters at the same time. Fords publications on this suggest:
1. Drain the fuel/water separator on the HFCM. Follow JD's advice using the empty 3 liter soda bottle.
2. change the HFCM filter. Discard the O ring. Diesel fuel will make the O-ring swell slightly. You should have a new one with the new filter set.
3. Replace the fuel/water separator plug.
4. Change the fuel filter on the engine.
5. Turn the key on for 3 cycles of 30 seconds each with 20 seconds inbetween to purge air.
I've found that if you loosen the cap on the engine fuel filter, then drain the HFCM, it will drain the line almost completely before you remove the HFCM element, and thus not drip all over you while replacing it. Also, If you park the truck on a slight incline, nose up, it drips less. On an earlier thread on this Forum, someone came up with an easy way to get better access to the HFCM on 4x4's. Jack up the left front of the truck to move the front drive shaft out of the way. The last time I changed mine, the cap on the HFCM tried to cross thread, and I had to remove the entire assembly to get it back on. Like SBV45 said, diesel fuel makes the o rings swell, if you remove the HFCM get a seal kit before removing the manifold. You cannot get the old seal to work again.
I just changed mine the weekend, both filters, released the HFCM cap and came back three hours later….. worked well not a drip.
Only made changing the oil a five-hour job....
By the way for those of you with OilGuard, the new Aluminum cap is wonderful.
Mine is in black almost wish I would have got Blue…or Red….hum...

Five hours, is that what you told the wife? I do oil and filter in 45 min flat!
No drips either.
