Fuel filter change.

Ok so i got a 2003 f-250 sd 6.0 and i am changing the in frame fuel filter how do i do it without getting diesel everywhere?

Pretty simple really, but you will get messy if you aren't careful. The engine mounted filter is self explainatory. The frame mounted FF is more difficult. If you have over half tank of fuel, you need to either wait until you have 1/4 or less, or elevate the front of the truck somehow. Once you have done that, place oil drain pan under the filter housing, use 6mm hex driver to remove the plug on the drain the fuel/water seperator. Once this has all run out, replace the plug. Next use a 36mm socket to remove the filter cap. Replace filter, o-ring, and screw the lid back on.

This is much easier to do on a 2wd than a 4wd because the front drive shaft gets in the way big time. Hope this helps.

worked great thanks and yes that damn drive shaft was in the way. not to mention whoever owned it before me put it on too tight and it took me 45 minutes just to take that cap off

Additonally - lube the o-ring w/ oil, not diesel. Diesel is a poor lubricant and it can also lead to early deterioration of the o-ring.

Also, I do mine with a full tank and no issues. Maybe some trucks have issues w/ tanks over 1/4 full, but this isn't universal (may not even be typical).

You might also want to check into the HFCM drain plug upgrade.

I have always changed the frame mounted filter first, and then changed the upper filter on top of the engine last. I always get about a quart of fuel out of the HFCM when I drain it, regardless of how full my fuel tank is. One time I decided to change the upper filter first. When I went to drain the HFCM to change the frame mounted filter, diesel continually ran out of the HFCM non-stop (my fuel tank was full). I kept thinking it would eventually stop, but it didnt. Huge mess. I haven't tried to replicate it, but changing the upper fuel filter first may be what causes the HFCM to drain continuously.
