Dean, you forgot to mention the not inconsequential valve spring costs. Isn't pro stock engine cost now about $2500/pass? And that's not considering 3600lbs of weight.

Yah George, I guess I didn't express it exactly right. New valve springs and check bottom end every 4 to 5 passes. The minimum weight for those cars (Pro Stock) is 2350 lbs. and that INCLUDES the weight of the driver. They "leave" at around 7000 RPM and shift around 9200 RPM. Typically they run a larger bore and a short stroke to maintain the 500 ci limit imposed by NHRA....a 4.15 stroke would not survive very long at 9000 plus RPM. When I was running a 514 ci engine back in the 80's I was showing signs of main-bearing "cap-walk" and I was only turning 7600 RPM max on a 4.05" stroked motor with a 4-bolt SCJ block. I typically went through a minimum of 2-3 sets of roller valve springs ($250 a set)a season and only raced two weekends a month.

im probably not gonna turn it over 9000. the cam says its good to 8600 or so but ill probably pull 2nd and third at around 8500, allowing 200 or so rpm for the tranny to shift ( its an automatic ).

What all did you do to your 460 to get that much hp out of it?

several little speed secrets.LOL. anywho, a decent cam, roller rockers( 1.8 intake, 1.73 exhaust), 14.5:1 compression,a stealth intake for the SCJ heads, DOVE heads w/ minor port work, and Hooker Headers. that was of course an estimation but on several dyno programs it made close to 700 at around 6000 rpm.

I'd be willing to bet that the cam will run out of steam before 8600. The cam recommendations are most likely intended for a 429 or 460 stroke. Get a longer stroke like you are talking about and it will likely make power to "only" about 8000 R's.

All the Ford engines I've read about or seen that play near 9000 have C heads with shaft rockers, aluminum block and, according to the builders, a medium or above level five figure price tag. And cam grinds developed by and for specific builders. Even the headers are engineered to the combo.

I believe this engine to be a pipe dream without the money George mentioned.

right now its only on paper. soon, i hope to have the money, and this will be a screamer. mark my words, u will know when its done. and i dont plan on being at 9000 for very long, if at all. i want a crank that'll stand up to it. hell the track is only 200 ft. and that should take a little over 3.5 secs.

Ya'll are talking about valve springs and other head related stuff. I thought I'd paste this here from my favorites. They're aluminum billet 4-valve heads. Really cool, but $5000+ a set. Supposed to be able to stand up to quite a bit of abuse.

theregoestheneighborhood, i seem to have the same problem as you , except i am not goin to spend2000$ on a billet crank. all i can find is cast iron cranks. ( im looking for a 4340 forged steel crank) i plan on making 500 -550 hp,then maybe 150 -200 shot of nitrous. but not if i cant find a crank that can handle it. if anyone knows where ones atplease let me know.
thanks
