Timing IS everything

Well I thought I did pretty good today.
Local Ford dealership said the brake proportion valve goes for $427.50!
Not gonna do it.
So now a few things I need are:

the proportion valve
new (er) chrome grille
2 Frame cross members
2 rear shock towers
would be nice to find a smallblock ZF.

Anyway been searching for a good crossmembers fer a couple months now,
can't install the new gas tank and straps without them.
Keeping the grille in the back burner for now. really needing the valve.
nothing on craigslist, or classifieds lately....

Today did a search, not expecting much, and there it is...
an ad for a 85 4x4 frame IN town!
he wants $500. Give him a call.
Go look at what he's got.
brought home:

The 2 crossmembers and gussetts I need,
A complete chrome grille,
Two rear shock towers,
and a working proportion valve...for $200!

Get home, the mail came, got my 1984 Electrical Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual and My HEI coil/dizzy and wires. (gets even better, the wife was not home to see all this stuff, all quickly squirreled away).

now just find a ZF.......

Already do, I love this book, I can stop asking "basic" questions that probably make some of you out there shake your heads and say "really?"

Actually, you ask hard ones like wire colors. That's why I have a book, so I don't have to remember that trivia. (That's been my philosophy since high school when the chemistry teacher asked questions about all sorts of elements and I said "Why learn all that stuff when it's on that chart hanging over the black board?" He didn't buy it.

Thanks Gary!
This is from a two-wheel drive...does it matter? thought it would not work for 4x4.

Great deal Reamer!

Sounds like you checked off most of your list.

The 2x gearbox would not bolt up to your transfer case adapter.

No, a 2x won't work on a 4x. I should have clarified, I only posted it to show what the price is. Sorry, but didn't think you'd want to have it shipped.

I'll continue to watch, but you really need to either find one locally or buy rebuilt. That's because a rebuild of a ZF is ~$600+ but you can get a rebuilt with a warranty for $1,250, like this one from ebay. So by the time you do as I did and buy a used one for $500 and then pay, as I plan to, $600 for someone to rebuild it you are in the same ballpark w/o a warranty. If you buy locally you might be able to take it back if it has problems, but if you ship it.....
