Someone on here buy this grille?

1951 FORD F-1 GRILL GRILLE AND BEZEL HOUSING NO RESERVE - eBay (item 270679483517 end time Dec-19-10 16:45:46 PST)

It looked great in the pictures, and there's no way you could duplicate it for this price. I was tempted but scared of chrome coming out of OH... and I figured it would go higher than this.

I wouldn't think so either, that's why I stayed out of it. It's hard to take a good picture of chrome, the flash hides a lot. I'd love to hear from whoever bought it, to see if it was as good as it looked.

$20 shipping too -- I bet he's eating it on that!

Looks like the auction is over. Probably a good thing. My dad keeps going on and on how he wishes he could find a chrome grill for his 52. When I see him this week I'll tell him that I saved him $300

From my recent experiences shipping things, I'd say you can count on that. ;-)

Who says it is original? The seller...and IMO, he hasn't a clue.

Personally I doubt it's original chrome, simply because...there was no such thing.

The Korean War began in 1950, copper and chrome were soon in such short supply that the automakers were forced to plate nickel onto bare steel, then spray clear lacquer on it for protection.

The lacquer turned brown, then flaked off...then the parts began to pit.

This nickel/lacquer process became known as Korean War Chrome and has been the reason why unpitted 'chrome' parts have been hard to find ever since.

Bill,

The tone in my original post was sarcastic, but hard to read in the lines. I was making a point, like you mentioned, that the seller is clueless.

Could the grille be from a Mercury or did the Korean war effect the Canadian side of the border also, just asking cause I don't know and wasn't hatched yet, lol. It is a pretty grille regardless and worth the money the guy was asking I think

I'm sure it was not originally chromed, back in the '60's you could get something like that chromed for a couple hundred bucks. Now it would cost $2000. On the other hand, we don't have chrome in our drinking water...

bill / nd is right about the chrome . my 52 has a dain disclaimer on the glove box door about that very thing , and it's chrome is in horrible shape . if it had real plating it'd be in great shape considering the care it received sitting indoors and being fussed over { only thing i've had to do was a radiator repair and the still in progress rewire / 12 volt conversion } .Attachment 31017
