Ok so I got an 85 f150 4x4 single cab long box. I just found an 83 f150 EXTENDED cab 2 wheel drive short box I had thought a motor swap but now I am thinking a cab swap would be easier..... But I do wonder if the frame would be the same size and I am not sure on how to find that out. Any opinions on this would be helpful and appreciated thanx
Frames are not the same. You have options, but I do not know which cab you want to end up with and what sort of truck you want to end up with. What are your goals, and what do you have to work with?
The easiest painless way to handle the vin is to have a good title with the cab you are swapping. Once you are done, go to the DMV and register the truck and do a "virtual" tag swap from one "truck" to the other "truck". The VIN on the frame will not match but 99% of the people do not even know it's there and it's very hard to see anyway. Your door tag will probably not match the equipment on the truck, but that would have been a problem anyway. The important thing is the title in your name matches the number behind the windshield and on the door tag.
If you do not have a title for the "new" cab, then you have a problem. The only other way is to have a bill of sale to prove where you got the cab from, and some places will let you combine the two trucks together and give you a new "issued" title with a "generated" VIN. Very messy and full of red tape in my opinion.
Oh right..... I want to end up with a Extended cab 4x4 shortbox truck so i would be swapping the cab from the 83 two wheel drive onto the 85 4x4 longbox frame
BDz - It isn't quite as easy in Okiehoma to do that. The end result is the same but there are several steps with the DMV including having to stamp a totally new made-up-by-Okies VIN into the doorframe.
Thinking of that and not knowing where you are, how 'bout going into the User Control Panel (User CP in the upper left) and fill out the location bit?

Won't work. The regular cab frame kicks up right after the cab. So when you put the extended cab on the regular frame, the back of the cab hits the frame where it kicks up. Some people have done it though, with a combination of a body lift and a little bit of notching so the extended cab will miss the frame. But then you are limited to a custom made flatbed for the rear, the shortbed will not fit correctly.
Why don't you bolt on the 4x4 stuff to the extended cab frame and get what you want that way.
I had thought about switching things over at first just had gotten some ideas from friends about a cab swap so I needed to research so...... Guess I need to research what to do to swap motor and axle and stuff thanks for the help all
Are both trucks complete? What are the years, the engines and trannies in both? The regular cab is a 4x4 f150 and the extended cab is a 2wd f150. That's what we know so far. You have a clear title to both correct? Get the axle code off both trucks. It's on the sticker on the door jamb.
