Steering

Is there suppose to be any back and forth play by grabbing the shaft ( no pun intended ) the gear box to the steering universal under the dash.

how much play is there in yours? there is a slip joint in the middle of the shaft so a mil. of play should probably be expected.

mine is rusted solid so I have no play in mine. there is also a raised portion on the end of the shaft going into the universal that should be bottomed out against it. if its not that is where your play is coming from.

The shaft slides in and out of the slot during any thrusting actions. A new tight slot is only to be expected in young less experienced trucks. For trucks of this generation it's normal for the slot to be loser do to previous users, however older slots may need more lube.
