After a little offroading on a log trail I use, (actually hauling wood, not just hammerin thru the mud) the steering became really loose. I checked all suspension parts and nothing bend/broke/etc. I next adjusted the steering box per some of the earlier threads. No change. Come to find out, on the steering shaft where the "slip" shaft is has become rounded-out enough that its causing the 1/4 turn play in the steering.
Quesiton is, can the joint be welded for a temp fix? Cash is a little tight until after the tax time, so I have every intentions of replacing it. Its no longer my daily driver as well so it sees limited use. Is there really that much flex between the cab and frame that the shaft needs to be able to slide?
Thanks
Don't know if this will help but my 83' F250 (leafs all around) had the steering shaft (between the gear box and the steering colunm) rust welded together. I bought a new shaft for it but who knows how long the shaft was rusted like that. I had no problems with steering or driving but had to replace it after the 3" body lift and I could not extend the shaft to fit.
