So i'm putting back together my '86 6.9 engine I took apart to clean up and freshly reseal to drop in my '89 F150.
I'm currently cleaning and painting all the accessories.
I wanna know if theres a trick to removing the PS pump from the bracket. I have the bracket off the engine ofcourse, but theres 3 big bolts holding the pump it self to the bracket, and the bolts faces the front (right behind the pulley), and I can't get them off without removing the pulley.
The center of the pulley has a big allen head hole, witch is really seized in there, if that does indeed turn.... do I need to loosen that up, and then use a pulley puller to pull that thing off?
From your description it sounds like the pulley needs to come off. They make a kit to do them (I have one, works pretty well) but you can probably remove it without one (a press would probably work if you have access).
I would soak that puppy for a while in some penetrating oil, the longer the better. A little bit of heat might help it go easier too.
Might be worth it to buy a puller/installer kit, tools are always an investment imo
I think with that style pulley its just a press fit. Are there threads inside the allen? My kit uses a little stud that bolts inside the allen, then use differnt adapters to either push out or pull in
Well first off you don't need to remove the allen as that's just the stud second off you should be able to loosen all 3 bolts with a wrench and get it off with the pulley still on (least on my truck with it still in the truck you could)
The pulley needs to come off.
You need to use the right kind of puller, not a normal gear puller with arms, you need to use one designed for power steering pulleys. It grabs onto the circular ridge on the center and a bolt pushes against the allen head part.
Once the pulley is off, take off the 3 bolts.
To re-install, first bolt the pump back onto the bracket with the 3 bolts. Then you screw a bolt into the allen head and use a nut to push the pulley back on.
If you try to use a gear puller, you'll bend the pulley and ruin it.
