Alright guys, I am looking at potentially picking up a "new" truck. Haven't had a chance to go check it out yet, but wanted to get some opinions, and words of advice from guys that know. I will be new to the diesel world, but am well aware of the "speed" shortcomings of the early diesels. I had an 86 150 with the 300 in it, so I am not concerned with the speed aspect. Just looking for another bullnose, and hopefully a truck as reliable as my last. Thanks for the help guys. Ford f350 6.9l idi 4x4 diesel Highboy
They're not rockets, but not slugs either in proper tune. Until you put a heavy load on 'em. They'll get you there, with everything, but not yesterday.
Price seems okay, rust is kind of a concern unless it's something you can fix or live with. The C6/6.9 is a tough combo.
It's not really a "Highboy", they didn't come factory that high, it has a lift.
Yeah, I am often annoyed with people calling their trucks "highboys". Oh well, no big deal I suppose. Rust is definitely not pretty, but I am not a stranger to it either. I rebuilt the 150 that I had, and the rust was worse for the most part, aside from the cab corner. I'm not sure I will be restoring this truck if I were to buy it. At least not for a while. It seems that every truck up here has rust, so I have just learned to live with it. One of the main uses for the truck will be hunting, and transporting kayaks for some fishing.
Yeah, I was definitely going to try to talk him down a little bit. We'll see what happens. Trucks around here seem to be going pretty high, even with rust issues. Probably because just about every truck has rust issues, so it doesn't effect the price as much.
Really, this truck isn't nearly as far gone in most areas as the 150 that I had. On that truck both floor pans were rotted, rear wheel wells were completely gone, rear bed corners PO repaired and re-rusting, and cab corners starting to rot. Both front fenders had to be replaced. $1000 for that truck.
I remember a while back, a canadian member bought a truck that i wouldnt even rob parts off of... ended up sectioning in like 1/3 of the frame. New bedsides, cab floor, fenders... and that was just to take care of the BAD stuff. I guess 5 year old cars are known to have cancer up there in some places... just makes me sick.
"some rust" lmao... understatement of the day for sure. Not even worth scrap lol half of its gone. 335k ... rusted out and 4k? Guy is prescription grade delusional.
Greetings from a few exits up I-91. There seems to be a lull in IDI postings on CL at the moment. I waited and lurked around for well over a year looking for one and the wait paid off. $2k seems a little steep considering the condition. People think they have a money tree with the IDIs and anytime they put any money into maintenance, it seems like add that into the listing price.
There's a bricknose in Uxbridge with a ZF5 for about the same price which sounds good and has a better looking body.
Id have to check it good and see how bad the rust is. He says it has frame rust, in my state thats an inpsection failure. Welding a frame PROPERLY and not making it worse is not for the novice builder. Welding in a patch section then loading it up will lead to stress fractures at the new repair, just something to consider
We don't have safety inspections here in CT, and no inspections at all on vehicles over 25 years. Frame rot is certainly a big concern though. Body rot, in most cases, I can handle. Just don't need an unsafe truck.
