Tach cutting out
Hey guys, just today my tach quit working. I was in fifth, and it just suddenly wasn't working. I had to pull over when some flashing lights went by, and it came back on. Then I really watched it, and it works everywhere but fifth gear.
Any ideas? This is my first diesel, and I haven't had it long.

Okay, so now it usually works, but occasionally stops. Please somebody help? This truck belongs to my father in law, and he told me I could buy it. I just need to know how much needs done on it.

Sometimes if you're lucky the sensor just needs cleaning.
Large nut on the timing gear cover (where you add oil) with the two wires coming from it. Pull it, clean the business end, inspect the wires, reinstall. Test.

Mine has been doing something similar... Tach reads zero at idle, but works at higher engine speeds, and seems accurate then. I will try cleaning "the business end" as you recommended and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks!
