A couple weeks ago I was at a stop light on a slight hill. When I went to drive my truck revved and started rolling backwards. I finally got in a safe place off the road and started up and tried again. Everything was fine until I got to the light and the same thing happened. This time after I couldn't get it started and got towed home. I figured my problem was my shifter coil so started some research on that. Was getting my truck started, my engine would change as I shift but not the transmission. I took a couple week break and when tried to start again nothing would happen at all. No crank no click nothing. I'm not sure if my coil is out or if I'm having starter relay problems. Anything at all I will appreciate.
Is the gear indicator stuck between P and R? If so, the computer may THINK the truck is in reverse, preventing it from starting. Its a common and easy fix. It doesnt cause everything you describe, if I understand you correctly, but its a place to start.
I had that connector on the transmission come loose on me once. Cleaning the contact, applying dielectric grease, and securing the connector fixed my problem.
Check the transmission fluid level with everything warmed up and the engine running. I had the same symptoms on a hill and my transmission was a couple quarts low.
Yeah that was the first thing I though. A while back I checked it cold and there was fluid on the dip stick. Can't try it hot now because I can get it to start at all now
I unbolted the transfercase shift motor and left the harness attached. I went and shifted the gears with the truck in on position and checked if the spindle was moving at all. It didn't move not sure if it should?
I did so diagnoses on my starting prom. I ended up changing my neutral safety switch out and it started right up. I got the gears all in the right places. Now in all gears when I go to press the pedal my rpms go up like they should but no movement for 5-10 sec. I'm scared to drive far so I've been pulling 30 ft out of parking spot and back. Anything will really help out.
I check all my fluids. The trans fluid I check after the truck warmed but couldn't drive anywhere, not sure if it needs to be driven to check. Was going to drain the the trans and see how much comes out. Change the filter and fill back up. Not sure if the computer needs to be reset.
How many miles on the trans? Sounds like its time for a new one. Mine did the same thing wouldn't move, then would go, that lasted a week then know more trans. Fluid looked good just warn out in side. These trans are noted for it.
