Broken Tach?

Hey was wondering if anybody else has trouble with their tach on their diesel? Mine says I'm idleing around or below 500rpm and when I get up to cruising speeds at 60mph, the tach jumps and bounces between 2000-2500 rpms. Just doesn't seem to work very well. Anybody know how to fix this, or what options do I have for an aftermarket gauge? Thanks again.

There is a big bolt on top of the timing gear cover.. has 2 wires going to it you can't miss this thing... anyways you take it out and clean it, or if worse comes to worse, you get a new one.
