Thank you. I read the manual and said XT-2-QDX Mercon Motorcraft Auto trans fluid and same in transfer case so is Mercon III the same or is there just Mercon. I went though this changing the fluid in my 87 cougar.
I run Red Line D4 in mine. Schaeffer's All Trans would be another good choice. But any good synthetic Mercon rated ATF is good for the transfer case. The transmission is another story. To many variables to make a recommendation. If it were new Red Line or Shaeffer's.
Just came back from Ford and talked to a diesel tech/driveline tech a good friend that works on this truck when Iam not said, Ford did away with the Mercon and he said Ford is putting Mercon V in place of Mercon. He said you can run Mercon V in place of Mercon but the other way because Mercon V is a Synthetic. The parts people made some calls with the XT-2-QMC part # and it cross to Mercon V. I guess this true the tech would lie hes a good guy. So Mercon V it is for at least now still doing some work on this.
MERCON V is available in conventional, blend, and synthetic. Just because it is MERCON V does NOT mean it is synthetic fluid. Make sure you know what you're buying. Any fluid that has a MERCON V rating will work fine.
I asked our lubricants guy about synthetic Mercon and he said he had never heard of such a thing. So I thought it didn't exist. Looks like I have more homework to do now. I'd really like to go over to synthetic if I can.
As always Mark, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I just did my 2000 Excursion. The Ferd parts guy said transfer case fluid or Mercon but not Mercon V. I didn't want to screw with it and had them send down 2 quarts of transfer case fluid. $7 per quart. Hardly worth trying to find an alternative. My case is different than yours.
