Generator Regulator

The charging system w/ a generator is a bit different than alternator, there is mechanical points for cutout voltage, current, and voltage regulation. I bought an aftermarket regulator because I like the FoMoCo script.

They are adjustable but it's kind of moving target. Right now it's a little on the low side but it doesn't boil out batteries either. The aftermarket version innards are slightly different as far as adjustment goes compared to the manual. What would be perfect for the generator system is some electronic regulation.

Does anyone make a solid state generator regulator?

I did a search and found this;
BSCH-30019
Bosch
#BOS-0-190-350-068 for 40 bux it's worth a shot, just have to hide it someplace and leave the original in place. A little fancy wiring and you should be good to go.

Thanks for that. Was thinking my internet search skills were slipping, couldn't find anything. That's because there isn't hardly anything.

I'm hit or miss with Google, you just have to play with the wording until you find something.

I found a couple dead links, and some plans on how to roll yer own w/ radio shack components.. The really early model T stuff has a few stealth versions for the cutout. Just a big diode would work there? The Bosch unit above was made for VW could be made to work with truck. Thought somebody would make one for the later effies or maybe a tractor at least. Cutout isn't really the problem. If I could adjust the voltage limits w/o buggering this mechanical unit up I would try that.

Don't really want to mess with it without another one on hand though. Involves bending adjustment arm to increase voltage output. And, it should be set with headlights on. Some suggest always running headlights with a generator system for this reason.

depeding on who designed the Bosche unit it may be self regulating and you won't need to screw with it at all. It's do-able with electronics.

Well it's not an expensive part.

I did track down on a tractor site how to adjust the repro voltage regulator. The repros have a spring with clips securing the point arm. By increasing the tension of the spring the voltage set point is raised. This is all temperature dependent and supposed to be set at 75F and fully warmed up, etc. Yeah right. It's 5F here, garage not much better. But it's in the zone now, if maybe a tweak down later, if it ever warms up around here.
