OK I now know that the problem is the voltage regulator...
My question now is where is it located and how do I replace it... how many amps is the electrical system in an aerostar? Does it have an external voltage regulator or is it actually a part of the alternator?
I was pricing alternators for this thing and they are expensive, so if this is something I can fix i'll definately do it myself...
Here's how you can find it. Look where the wiring plugs into the alternator. The voltage regulator mates with the wiring plug and is held onto the alternator with a couple of screws (might be torx, but I don't remember). It's roughly the size of a book of matches. Watch out when you take it off, you don't want to lose the brush springs. If you go to the Schuck website (http://www.cskauto.com/) and look up the part, you'll find a picture.
Thanx guys... yeah I figured it out when I went out and looked closer at it...
I'm taking it in tomorrow and letting someone else worry about the replacement, that way all I have to worry about is paying for it... I could do it myself, but I just don't have enoughe spare time or patience to do it, and it would get put off and put off until it got really broke...
it's running about 15.5 volts on idle, but listen to this when I floor it on the highway it shoots up to around 20 volts! I can't have that now, so it's definately going in tomorrow to get fixed...
