check engine light

2006 F350. 16,000 miles (really). I bought it new but don't drive it much and then only locally (home depot for supplies, moving things, etc... But, I change the oil and perform maintenance regularly. Recently the check engine light came on (little picture of an engine). It doesn't run any different (runs great as a matter of fact). I know on some vehicles the check engine light or maintenance light comes on and just needs to be reset (to get you into the dealership). Is this the case? Should I buy a code reader and see what's up? I suppose I could take it into the dealership, but for what they would charge me for a diagnostic I could have a nice code reader. input would be appreciated. Thanks.

See if your local parts store will read it for you. Go from there.
