It means to check the engine. ( you knew that...)
If it comes on steady, but then goes out, it's something you should get checked "soon". That means getting a code reader to plug into the system in the vehicle to read the trouble codes.
If it is blinking, it needs to be checked ASAP, as more serious troubles cause the light to blink.
There are many things that will trigger the light, thus the need for the code reader and analysis of the code along with inspection of the engine and related systems.
