I totally agree with everyone who suggests getting one out of the "rust belt". However, its about an eight hour drive from here to get out of the rust belt...and to be honest, Im not even sure if the truck we own now will make that drive and back. Would probably end up towing our SUV home with the new one. All the vehicles Ive owned have came from these "northern" states, all have had rust issues. However i have seen a few excursions for sale, that came from Southern States, I suppose that would be the next best option. Now heres another question that i posted elsewhere, havent gotten any replies yet, so i thought to ask you guys. Ive noticed around here its hard to find a 7.3l Excursion with less than 175k miles for under $11k, and when they do pop up, they have had very minimal maintenance or repairs done. Yet there seems to be more of the 7.3s with 200k miles under $11k on the market, and those have extensive repair and maintenance records available. Now if you had to make a six hour drive for each of these trucks in separate directions with just this bit of info, which would you suggest looking at?
Ya all my vehicles I have gotten are from up here u just have to look. I have a 63 impala that has been in va pa and md it's whole life and has little rust. Just have to look. Before I went to look at mine I said take pics of the bottom all over. If I was u I would make sure there are lots of pics and as much as info about it. I drove 7hr one way to get mine. I had the Carfax and pics of every in of it before I left my house. Makes the decision easier
After searching quite awhile today, i found a 2003 7.3 with under 140k miles for about $11k online, eight hours away. Seller responded to my first question. Then i asked him if there was anything wrong with it or needed to be repaired....that I would be bringing a certified diesel tech with me...

guess what?
NO REPLY. Surprise, surprise.
Are you looking at a 4x4? $11K is really cheap for a really nice 7.3 4x4 Ex. I just sold mine with 220K on it for $16k. I am in Oklahoma and we have lots of Ex's around here. All rust free.
Its a 4x4. If anyone is on right now who knows about repairs and costs can you message me please? Cant ask my husband right now, curious to know approximate cost for fixing the issue this truck has. Thanks! Oklahoma is just too far of a drive for us, however the one im looking at right now is from a generally snow free state

Sometimes, seller screen buyer too. 140k is low mileage for $11k. If I was the seller and someone from 11 hrs away say I am bringing a certified diesel tech, I would not care to much about the deal. I don't like people messing with my truck.
It is possible that seller have a good truck and knows it. So he knows it will sell easily. Hence, local buyer is easier to deal with.
It is unfortunate that you don't have much local selection. But if you want the one you like, you'll have to travel and spend some money to find the right one. Good luck

Depends on what's wrong with it. Diesel means pricy parts as far as motor goes
Texas has a plethora of Ex's or at least they did when I was looking about 11 months ago!
Repair costs? Depends are you doing the work yourself or paying someone to do it.
I have sunk about 4500.00 in mine and bought it for 12k. It is a 6.0L and the body was in great shape. I knew I had to do front suspension up front. I have replaced the water pump, WP pulley, rebuilt FICM, alternator, belt tensioner, brakes all the way around.
BTW make sure you look at maintenance costs so you don't get sticker shock wen you spend $100 on an oil change.

I'd like to say Oklahoma is a snow free state, but it snowed 4" just this morning! Rusty trucks here are unusual though--it basically means they came from the midwest.
Both Excursions that I've owned were either purchased new in Oklahoma or came from Texas. In both cases, I've never experienced any sort of rust issue.
