what's making my truck want to start when connecting battery cables? and key is off! disconnected batt cables to install new starter. at one point, while putting the serpintine belt on, the wrench slipped and hit the positive side of battery, at that time the cables were hook up. major sparks were flying. took the starter relay out and still tried to start. looked at the starter switch under the dash, it looked fine. are there two solenoids on the '02 7.3 or only one, on the starter.
Sounds like a bad solenoid. That is what "flips" to get power from the battery to the starter. Or.... The switch on the steering column is bad.
I would try to unplug the switch and then connect the battery to see if it still tries. If not then replace the switch. If it still tries then I would start looking at the solenoid. I haven't changed mine out in the 8yrs I have had the truck so I am not sure if it is on the firewall or attached to the starter.

If 99-01 model, then try removing the ignition wire from the solenoid....it just pulls off with a little effort. If the engine still tries to start then your solenoid is stuck in the on position and is likely faulty. It's also possible you have your Y cable reversed...that would probably give the result you are experiencing.

solenoid on starter, and is brand new. I have been working on my truck for the last 4 weeks. I'm sure I did something to it, somehow.
Jerry, do you have an alarm system? If the alarm system has remote start capability, that may be the cause of your problem. The little alarm system brain will get confused when power is restored and sometimes try to start truck. There should be an inline fuse from the driver side plus terminal that feeds power to the alarm system. Even if the remote start is not enabled or on the key fob, most systems have the capability. Try removing the alarm system fuse (usually located near the battery). The alarm module is usually concealed behind the fuse panel under the steering wheel. Larry
Nope, no alarm system. When I was attempting to fit the serpentine belt on, the wrench slipped and hit the pos end on batt. and sparks flew. Knew I should have dissconnected cables first. I shorted something out.
