Fuel Filter Frustrations

Well to make a short story long, I swapped out my Napa wix filter for a 2 piece racor/MC filter around Thanksgiving. I followed instructions on the filter and put the Bevel side up and tightened the filter cap by hand. Big freaking spraying leak. This went on for about 6 more attempts, bevel side up, down, different oring. Finally on the last try I tightened the cap and started up and had to drive 5 kids to practice. I got to practice and was smelling diesel in the cab and decided to check. Sure enough, more spray! Started over, put the cap on, waited, backed it off , tightened by had and then took a piece of dowel that I used before and tapped it tight. Hey, Hey, it worked! No apparent leak.

Fast forward to Christmas and my water pump had a catastrophic failure. So the truck sat until I got it up and running last weekend. The water pump install went pretty smooth. After I drove the truck for 30 minutes, I thought I caught a hint of diesel. Sure enough, I saw the slightest glint of seepage. Hey maybe it needs tightening so i tapped it tighter with the hammer/dowel and caused it to turn into a leak

What the heck am i doing wrong? How tight to I need to get it? I have tried 2 separate gaskets and a dozen attempts. Should I just go back to the Wix filter?

I always use 3 screwdrivers. Two make an X shape in the slots and one as a handle to pry between the X. I do this to remove and install the lid. Mind you I don't go crazy, just a good snug. I've never had any problem. And obviously they have to be fairly big sturdy screwdrivers.

I can't see what you're doing wrong here. Sounds like you're doin it all right. Maybe you got a dud lid? I don't see how it could be, but maybe it's off somehow.

I switched to the Purolater brand. It has a big plastic nut on top for a socket. Mine have plagued me as well until the Purolater. Just hope it's doing as good of a job...

I purchased a non-OEM filter once that came with a new cap. While it initially worked, I started the truck one day and while talking to the neighbor for a few I noticed fuel pouring down. Mine turned out to be a cap that would work loose no matter how tight I could get it. Went back to OEM filter and cap and have not had an issue.

I have bought my fuel filters from oreillys for a few years. The buy the filter with cap on top. I spin them off by hand, and tighten by hand. Never had a leak or any issues.

There have been several posts on the Forums about that tapered o-ring not sealing or not staying tight. I would find another brand of filter.

Andy, A few of us have switched to an alternative o-ring. Here's the thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...id-gasket.html

Has anybody with the lid gasket problem ever checked the FPR to see if it is stuck and overpressuring the system?

Thank you! I will order these today. As with most things, I will order 5 and go out to my truck to try one more time with the beveled ring. I am willing to bet that it won't leak.. Seems I have had a streak where i think I have lost/broken something, bought a replacement, only to find out I did not need to spend money because the part was repairable or the tool was on my bench all along.. However, $10 for piece of mind with these new gaskets, is well worth it.
