Starter "clicks", is it bad??

Well, I'm pretty sure my starter is fried. Battery is charged, it just makes a "click" noise from the switch by the battery when you try and start. Assuming the cable from the switch to the battery is good, could it be anything else but the starter?

Thanks,
Biederboat

Sounds indeed like the starter solenoid is fried, or the starter motor itself is dead.

Make sure battery is really 'dead', and wiring is good before changing anything. Many times when the starter/selenoid does not get enough juice it will 'click'. Just my 2 cents.

Tap it with a hammer - if it starts up, it's the solenoid.

Mine has now started to click occasionally on the first try to start. I turn the key again and then it starts up. I guess the solenoid is going bad, I've had this too often on other cars.

Check the solonoid on the left inside fender by the battery. Take a screw driver and short accross posts. You will get sparks at contact but if she rolls over it is probably not the starter. Oh yea BE CAREFULL not to touch the fender or any grounding point with that driver or you will really see sparks!

biederboat,

I haven't had any problems with my Aerostar starter, but I had an Explorer that had the same symptoms. It turned out that the starter relay was good. Inspection of the starter upon removal showed that the starter solenoid copper contacts had worn down to just about nothing. This inspection requires removal of the solenoid from the starter to see the contacts. I purchased new copper contacts from an alternator/starter repair shop for approximately $5.00 and replaced them myself. Starter worked great for several years until I sold the Explorer and purchased my Aerostar.

Just a thought.

Ron

Solenoid is a pretty good bet. But I agree with cheesedog1, make sure your battery is really charged up and all the connections are good down to the starter including the ground strap.
