I'd bet your egr valve stuck open when you were romping around. I'd pull it and check it, clean it. Oh throw some additive in there as well. Power Service diesel kleen white bottle.

So I put the power service in it a couple days ago and haven't had a problem with it since. I also put a Scan Gauge II on the truck to monitor values and everything has checked out great for the past couple days. So I think it was gelling after all. That would be my professional opinion....lol!!
Good deal. No need having a truck if you cant have fun with it.lol. may need to do a couple of doughnuts to get her cleaned out.lol. I do the old Italian tune up every no and then to keep her clean.

Definitely gelled fuel. I would do a fuel filter change asap. This has happened to me 3 times this year. Never made a difference how much I conditioned the fuel. I finally switched where I buy my fuel from and had zero problems during this last -20 cold snap.
We've been having sub zero temps here in Colorado the last week or so. Yesterday my 06 F350 6.0 shut off 3 times on the way to work. Loosing power the entire time. Luckily I could put it in a heated garage while at work. It sits outside at home. It's been fine since. My co-worker's 08 F350 6.4 shut off on him yesterday and had to be towed home. So my guess is that your fuel gelled or some moisture froze somewhere in the line.
I had problems with my truck on occasion. It would bog right down, no power, rpm drop off. I would floor it and it would bog more then it would suddenly pick up power and rpm and blow off a huge cloud of black. It would fuss for a bit like that and then run like it never had a problem. Didn't know what to make of it. Then read in the forms you have drive it like you stole on a regular basis. So every trip to work we some pedal to the metal time. I believe that this exercises the turbo vanes and if you don't exercise them regular they get stuck and you bog down on power. After I did this I have never had a re-occurrence.
Again you could have bad or non- winterized diesel
