Racor PFF4596 Replacement Fuel Filter Element for 1999-2003 Ford 7.3L Diesel
I just went and took a look at the filters that Bob sells in the link.
There is mention of 2 different "O" rings.....the beveled one for the contact between the top and bowl, and another smaller "O" ring......my question is where does the smaller one go? I always thought it was meant for some other application other than a 7.3 and have never used them in nearly 70k miles I've had my truck.

EDIT: Just took a look at Guzzle's info on changing the fuel filter and BOY, do I feel stupid now! I found that the smaller "O" ring goes on the grove on the filter itself!! (I WILL now take the top BACK off and INSTALL the small "O" ring!!) (BTW:What happens when one doesn't use the smaller "O" ring? --hoping my guess is wrong but I'm guessing that not using it would allow whatever crap/sediment past the filter??)(What an idiot!)

The new "PTC" brand filters I have came with both sizes, but the larger one isn't beveled, its more flat, and it fits real well and like I said before it sdeals real well.

I've not had an actual FORD top in my hands to compare, but the "PTC" brand top sure looks nice and stout!

I use the factory screw on filter lid with the Racor filters and have had no issues with leaks.

Exact same experience here!! Three 7.3's, total of 13 filter element changes on the three vehicles over the past 7 years... never a single leak (five changes, 50K miles in five years on the Excursion... 7 changes, 145K miles in 7 years on my F250... 3 changes, roughly 50K miles in three years on my son's F250).

OEM lids with Racor replacement elements on all two vehicles, replacement screw on lid with Racor elements on the third.

Lol! I remember when most brands didn't supply any instructions with the filters (at least ones I used), now it seems all of them do. Maybe if they had supplied them back when you started using you would've known.

I don't think you've done any harm. Maybe Tugly will chime in, he knows a good bit about how the bowl works.
But I don't believe any contaminated fuel could've made it thru. I think you were just mixing filtered return fuel with unfiltered tank fuel. But again, I could be wrong.
