Hey guys I just bought an 02 7.3 and have a few questions about it.
1) When I first start it and let it warm up for a couple minutes, when I pull out I can hear a bunch of air by what sounds close to the turbo going pssssssss and the truck won't build boost and it can't even get out of it's own way. It stays like this for a few seconds then the hissing goes away and boost starts to build. Once warm this problem does not occur but it does seem to take a while to build boost.
2) The truck will sometimes loose throttle response. I have searched this but when my problem occurs the SES light does not come on and a simple re-application of the throttle fixes the problem.
3) It seems to be very slow. My dad used to own a stock 99 and it seemed to scoot pretty quick but mine seems like it takes forever to get to 60..even floored. It also seems to not have the power my dads did and really takes awhile to get up to speed at any time. It feels like the pedal just isn't getting pressed down all the way even though I am.
Is there a chance all these problems are related and does anyone know where to start? Any input is appreciated!
You may have a few things going on. I think there may be something going on with the exhaust back pressure valve. You describe that hissing noise that the valve makes when the truck is cold. It is supposed to do that, but if it is stuck partially closed, it can rob power.
There are two separate things at play here. The cold hiss is normal, that warms the truck up much faster than if it's not hissing.
Putting that aside, now we just need to look at the anemic warm performance. Pull the ICP sensor connector off (letting the connector dangle), start the truck, and go for a short drive around the neighborhood. Let us know what this does.
