So I was talking with my buddy last night and we got to talking about our trucks. It seems that a couple of months ago he started having a little issue. It seems that while going down the road at just about any speed, he will press the throttle to accellerate a bit and it seems like there is no response. No increase in RPMS, no turbo spin up, etc. The truck doesn't slow any, and the engine stays where it is at but nothing increases. If he lets off then hits it again, sometime with a second or third try it will suddenly kick in and go.
My thought is the TPS.... Any other ideas guys? I would like to go in with more than one option on this.
Sounds like a TPS issue to me, not a wastegate problem.
Even if the wastegate were messed up, the engine RPM's would still increase regardless. The fact that he has a dead pedal and has to keep tapping it to make it work indicates a TPS problem.
On a few occasions when I've let my oil get low during cold weather, I have seen the same thing, but only during the first few minutes of runnning. Once it's warm, the problem would go away. All I had to do was top off the oil to resolve the issue altogether.
Along with a possible TPS problem check to make sure his EBPV isn't sticking. Although mine stuck shortly after pulling out of my driveway a couple years ago I couldn't get my truck to go and with this cold weather the EBPV operates back and forth opening and closing until the engine temps get up to par, it could be sticking on him between those cycles. As for a fix maybe a shot of WD-40 on the butterfly connections on top and bottom on the exhaust side of the turbo, not 100% percent sure of this fix but somebody will chime in their thoughts.
Ok.... update. I took it for a test run and it wasn't that the pedal didn't respond, it was the speed. Especially around 30 to 40mph you would slightly press the pedal, no increase in speed til you finally pressed it enough to cause the rpms to go high enough then the turbo would finally spool up at almost 2200 rpms, then you got decent power. We went back to his house and popped the hood to check the IC tubes. More soot than Santa's a$$ after Christmas Eve. So we went through all the boots and snugged everything up and did some cleaning. He didn't even know his boots were blue. DOH! So another test run and much better performance. But he complained about it seeming like it shifted funny so it is going to the tranny shop tomorrow to have it checked out. It does shift kinda of mushy.
Does he have a chip or anything on it? Reason I ask is cause I had a TS per chip that caused the same symptoms. Just another thought.
Nope 100% stock. Although I had him take my truck for a spin and he came back, went right in the house and told his wife he is getting a chip. HEHE another one falls to the dark side.
