Rattling truck: Normal, or a problem?
towards the end of this video, you can hear what my motor with a new top end and proper timing sounds like for reference.
Looks like I may have to make two more videos: 1, at highway speed/load where the engine is loaded down. Really quiets most of the noise, except for the clacking.
2, my other truck. Just got it on the road last week, and it 'feels' a bit more snappy than mine ever did, despite being NA. I think it's a lot less worn, and it sounds a lot smoother, with more /consistent/ engine noise... which made me wonder about this one.
Hm, actually, if anyone knows... Is there some inherent irregularity with our engines? I mean, you listen to both mine and akamacgyver's engine at low idle and you can hear a 'loping'/spot where it makes less power. Turning the idle /way/ down makes this very pronounced. Anyone know /why/?
Still can't figure out where all of the oil leaks are coming from, but most seems to be just the CDR being crap and oil getting sucked through that, leaking out from the filter, and making the entire back of the engine soaked. Been fussing with that for months, trying to figure out exactly where it's leaking(The turbo's oil source is clean, the drain is well-sealed into the old cdr hole).
Recently, I started having issues with one cyl not firing after cold startup; Give it some throttle for a few seconds and it works fine.
I figured that meant one of my injectors was leaking down overnight.
This morning I started it, kept the idle low and cracked each line.
I found out that cyl #3 wasn't firing at that time.
Pulled the injector and while it looked black at the tip, I didn't see anything *obviously* wrong.
I replaced it with one I had from another parts truck. The old one was an E-code I think, the new one was a BB-code. Popped it in anyway, because I figured it couldn't be any worse than the obviously broken one I had.
Started her up, revved it till I got fuel to that cyl... and it started running smoother than I ever have seen her.
It's pretty much gotten rid of that lope/ticking, and it's far more consistent and smoother from idle to redline.
At some point I know I need to match my injectors... but it's working a lot better now.
So, for future reference... if you see something like this, it might just be a flaky injector.
