engine knock
my engine makes a knock the noise is a very strong abrupt noise in the engine like a huge knock i advanced the timing and it went away but when performing a stall test today the engine backfires out the carb so the timing is off but how do i cure these two problems.

Where exactly is the knock coming from? Get a long screwdriver and try to locate the source of the noise. Also what is the history of the motor? A knock comes from the lower end usually, while a tick is usually valvetrain related. Get a timing light, it may be your timing was way off and you were pinging real bad.

it does not happen all the time just when the timing is in a certain spot at idle it is more of a jolt you fell through the whole truck so i have to advance the timing more and it goes away

Try pulling the vacuum advance hose off the distributor, plugging it, THEN setting the timing. If you leave it plugged in and set timing you'll set it way too retarded. (as in advanced / retarded)
Proper initial timing should be somewhere between 6 and 12 degrees BTDC. See what your motor likes best.
