Lost my truck keys and do not have a spare... When I called the dealership they said that my truck is too old to have another key made through them. I know my other option is to get a locksmith but I wanted to ask if someone could explain to me why they cannot make a key for me using my VIN? Or if I have other options.
Since you've lost all your ignition keys now, you could also replace the ignition key cylinder. However, then you would no longer (likely) have a key that would work the mechanical door locks. You would still need a locksmith, dealer, or well-equipped shop to program the keys to the anti-theft system. Maybe the locksmith can make a key based off the VIN?
I really don't know why the dealer would not be able to get the appropriate information. Digital storage space is small and inexpensive these days, there's really not much reason for Ford to throw away the information or no longer provide the information.
The local dealer made a key for my 04 explorer last year, but had to program my computer for it.
He hooked his dignostic machine to my ex and got all the info then gave me the code for the buttons on the door unlock info also.
I did have one key that worked before I went to the dealer.
Cost me right at $100.
If they have one key they could copy and program. THEy might not have the original key spec.. Why i dont know. Have a locksmith make a key to fit the door lock. Then he or dealer can make two ignition keys off that and program.
