ABS

I am new to this. There is probably already a thread on this issue but I do not know how to navigate this site.

I am working on a 2007 F550 superduty. 2WD. ABS light came on and pointed to rear sensor. We replaced and light went out, but then would come on and off randomly. We tried another new sensor. Same thing. Light is on all the time now and gives code C1175. Did a visual check on wiring. Everything looks good.

I saw it mentioned a couple times on different forums to pull rear cover and check bearings and ring. Is this a common problem? Any advice?

Hi Larry, In my dealings with Ford on ABS issues,(my 1990 F150 has an older RABS type) the "come on and off randomly" is actually a flash code for the problem. I am not sure if yours is the same with the C1175 code. In my truck, in the differential, sandwiched between the ring gear and cluster flange, is a notched plate that the sensor reads speed input from. A badly worn indicator surface, or improper sensor spacing can interfere with operation.

Thanks for the reply Seattle Slim. I'll be going over all the wiring again tomorrow. Then I'll pull the cover. What I don't get is "a badly worn indicator surface". I haven't seen the ones mounted on the INSIDE of the pumpkin, but aren't they "non wear" items? It just has to pick up a signal (or an interruption). Other than that, there would have to be bad bearings/play for it to be out of alignment enough that it wont read correctly. Does that sound right?

How is your speedometer acting?

C1175 Speed Wheel Sensor LR input circuit failure., so if you replaced the left rear sensor, then check to see if ring is clean and the wiring looks OK.

redford seems to be more in the know on your problem. Individual wheel sensors? Mine uses one sensor mounted with an O-ring gasket through a machined hole in the top of the diff pumpkin.

I think that is the VSS, or the speed sensor. At least that is where the speed sensor is located on the Sterling 10.5 inch differential.

One of the codes reads "LR sensor", but there is no "left rear". There is just ONE on the rear axle pumpkin, obviously reading a ring on the inside. I tried a different sensor and cleared the codes. C1175 came back immediately. "speed wheel sensor LR input circuit failure". Guess I'll be chasing wires. Visual inspection looks good. When we first did the speed sensor and the light went out, driver reported that it seemed to come on when hitting bumps. Thought one wire connection looked corroded/bad so we just chopped it out and hard wired it. Same issue persisted (intermittent) till it finally came on and STAYED on.

Did a continuity test on wires, found a problem, fixed it, and still same code, same results: hard fault. C1175 immediately after clearing code. According to what I've found on this site, and others, for guidance, I am down to the ABS module.

The bus is going to ford on Monday for other warranty issues. I am going to have them check the ABS issue and confirm my diagnosis. Will update when I know more.
