I changed my oil this weekend and noticed my coolant was at the min level I added a little (half way point between min and max) prestone extended life coolant to the degas bottle. now I find out that you shouldn't use regular coolant on diesel engines. will this small amount hurt anything ?
The 7.3's shipped with green w/ sca treatment. You should maintain sca level or better yet switch to a cat ec-1 rated coolant. In my opinion if you are going to run green with sca, you should also run a coolant filter.
You didn't hurt anything. These motors are tough enough to handle a lot more. That being said, I do exactly as 78fordman said. I run green coolant with SCA treatment and monitor it every couple months and add as necessary. I also run an external coolant filter from Dieselsite.
Let me add- that's not even the wrong type of coolant as long as it matches what you're already running. As long as you're keeping up with your SCA levels you're just fine.
Baldwin B5134 filters -- $7 (these filters have NO SCAs in them, as I am using ELC coolant...so don't use them with "green" coolant, you'll need a different filter)
Baldwin Coolant Filter Base #CFB5000 3/8-18 -- $27
3/8 inch hose barb 3/8 MNPT (3) -- $4 total
Hex Head Plug, 3/8 In, Brass, (3) -- $3 for a pack of 10
Worm Gear clamps -- $6 for a pack of 10
3/8" barbed "T" fitting (1) - $5
3/8" heater hose (maybe 4-5 feet?) -- $5
Personally, I don't use SCA precharged coolant filters. I just monitor the level with test strips and add in DCA4 (Fleetguard equivalent to MC VC-8 I believe) as necessary. Also, Dieselsite recommends NOT using them with their system for whatever reason.
I went with the Dieselsite kit simply for the convenience, as well as I liked the fit and finish with the billet aluminum filter base. I didn't feel like $109 was a bad price. But I can definitely see why one would want to DIY as well.
