X2 on the heat xfer and possible fuel boiling. Its is made of phonolic material for a reason.
The stock intake manifold is cast and will get hot and that heat can transfer to the fuel lines/carb, The heat build can boil the fuel before it has a chance to get to the carb.
Some say a old trick is to put a wooden close pin to prevent it....urban legend.
The clothes pin trick actually works. I use it myself and have used it since about 77. I owned a 75 mustang 2 with a 351w and she would not run more than 20 minutes in summer before vapor locking. About 5 clothespins solved that. I have 4 on my 78 Bronco now.
The spacer not only insulates carb from heat, it also helps bottom end torque. Dont know if it is seat of the pants noticeable but it is measurable on dyno. Actually 1 of the cheapest performance upgrades you can do.
