I recently scored an in cab hood release hood latch on E bay which appears to be complete. I'm going to install it in my 74 Highboy, but I am unsure exactly where to route the cable. I know it starts out by going through the opening in the firewall, near the master cylinder and ends at the latch. The cable has 4 plastic rings encircling it that have barbs that mount to holes in the sheet metal I'm guessing. Does anyone know the precise routing?
I've got a '78 Supercab with an inside release. I'll try and get pics of the routing tomorrow if nobody else gets to it first. It may be tomorrow night before I get them posted. I've got cattle to sort and haul tomorrow.
Latch release mounts just to the right of the e brake release. Yes cable right thru a grommet plugged hole.
Have to sort of take the latch apart (one screw and a small hinged cover) to get the cable off the release lever. Its just to the left of the red circle, look for one screw.
Lays on the top side of the inner dvrs side fenderwell and as straight as possible. Then thru the grill and to the latch. Did you get a different center up right piece?
Make sure you very careful setting it up, the cable is not that heavy duty and the can get rust/corrosion in the hood latch cable end and snap very easy. I would make sure and lube the cable.
When you have it apart (the cover to remove the cable) you might cut a small notch in the cover before you put it back on so if the cable ever breaks you can put some kind of hook in there to grab the release that the cable normally pulls.
If you do it on the bent end (near where the cable grommet is) no one will ever be the wiser. Getting a hood open without pulling the latch is a great way to really tear something up. And trying to just remove the 2 mount bolts is a giant PITA and I think it will not work anyway, to much stuff in the way.
Anything with a push/pull cable relies upon several things.......the cable needs to be properly lubricated, the outer jacket needs to be un-crimped or un-pinched, and the straighter you can route it the better.....and re-directions of it need to resemble the turns on a major interstate freeway, long gradual turns
