"Tighten the wheel bearing adjustment nut, while rotating the wheel back and forth, until a noticeable drag is felt. This will assure the proper seating of the wheel bearing cones and rollers. 3. Back off the adjusting nut at least one but not more than two castellations (about 1/8-1/4 turn). Lock the adjusting nut in this position with a new cotter pin. 4. Check the front wheel roation. If the wheel rotates freely with no noticeable end play, install the grease cap and hub cap. If the wheel is still loose, or it rotates roughly, the bearing cones and rollers and the cups are dirty or worn and should be cleaned or replaced."
This is from my 64 shop manual, but the procedure is pretty much the same for most.
