Ignition Not Starting

When I turn the key the dash lights go on. But there is no crank. Any possible causes?

A bad starter, a bad starter relay, loose battery connections, a bad ignition switch, a bad DTR sensor(neutral safety switch), or you're not fully in neutral or park.

Ok, just went to check all again. When I jiggled the shift lever in the park it started a couple of times. What is the problem and fix for this?

Check the starter relay (solenoid) located on the firewall above the battery. It is usually behind a cover. Especially if you don't hear any clicking when trying to start the engine.

With the key in the ignition and turned on you can jump the two large posts of the solenoid with a screwdriver or i like to use a jumper cable. Just be very careful not to touch any metal on whatever you are using to jump the connection or you may get shocked.

When you jump the solenoid connections if the engine starts, remove your jumper right away (so you don't grind the starter) and then go get a new starter relay and replace it (~$20).

This part has gone bad on all three Ford trucks in my family at least once.

Usually when it starts to go bad, it will not start and then work a few times making you think that little things fixed it (e.g. jiggling the battery cable) and then it stops working again. If it is not starting, try the jumper test.

Also, if you can hear clicking while turning the key it is probably the battery and not the starter relay.

Still needs more troubleshooting.

Check for excessive play in the shifter (loose Torx bolts, worn out shifter tube bushings, etc).

If there is no play, then it's probably either a misadjusted or intermittent DTR sensor.

Try starting in Neutral and see if it works better in the meantime.

Other possibilities, but check those common ones first.

The starter relay solenoid ($20)was the fix. Thank you.

Moving the shift lever around has no bearing on the relay. Keep an eye on it.

Could've just been coincidence I suppose.

I have noticed excessive play on the shift lever. Plus sometimes the Park gear does not seem to engage fully. There have been a few times as I as getting out of the cab the truck rolled a bit.

Fix the shift lever play.

It's common for vehicles to roll a bit until the parking pawl engages. That's why they invented the parking brake.

Tighten the 2 torx screws under the dash for the shifter plate.
