I am interested in getting some more light out of the stock headlight units on my 09 F-150. I have been reading on line about bulbs but there is a lot of confusion on which brand gives an improved beam without looking too blue. I understand all those blue bulbs actually produce less light due to their coating....has anyone upgraded to something they are happy with?
In my 2006 I used Sylvania Silverstar Ultras for a while, that is until I found Philips X-Treme Power bulbs. The Philips have no coating, thus they are a little more yellowish than the SS Ultras but they threw out a ton of light, especially in high beams. I ran those in conjunction with 9145 fogs (OEM is a 9140, so the extra 5watts per bulb in the 9145 was noticeable). The combo of those two was a nice upgrade from stock.
Now, HIDs are a HUGE improvement. I would suggest either coughing up the $$$$ for the OEM '13+ headlights from Ford as they are well made. Then you can choose your bulb/ballast of choice. I see lots of guys on the other forum running Morimoto HIDs in their retrofit. Sypder and Recon make ok headlights but I have heard some horror stories about their products and customer service.
Haven't put them in my truck yet, but the Philips X-treme Power worked great in my '96 GT. If you really want to find some good discussions on this, check out candlepowerforums.
