I know many are not fans of the stock OEM bulbs. I typically upgrade my bulbs soon after buying a new car, but decided to give my stock lights a chance first. But a few dark morning commutes this past week convinced me it's probably a good idea to upgrade now.
Looking for ideas and suggestions for new DOT approved bulbs. I don't want eye-scoring power for oncoming traffic, or bulbs with a short life cycle. The Home CEO hasn't authorized any of the more expensive LED upgrades, so those are off the table. Just looking for cleaner/whiter and better projecting light. Thinking of trying the PIAA Night Tech lights. Have used the upgrade Sylvania in the past and wasn't overly impressed.
I installed Sylvania Ultra high and low beam. There better than stock but not as good as they were in other vehicles that I have used them in. Don't know why other than the headlight housing obviously is different.
I wasn't super impressed with silver star ultras either. They were an improvement, but not substantial.
One thing you could do is replace your H11 with an H9 bulb with minor modifications to the bulb. The H11 is rated at 1350 lumens where the H9 is rated at 2100. The only downside is that the H9 doesn't have a light cap on the end of the bulb, but since the F150 has a built in bulb cap, this should be a moot point.
The important part is that it's a DOT approved bulb and the focal point of the light bulb has not changed and will therefore not degrade the beam pattern like you get with an HID or improperly designed LED bulb. Personally I'm not in to changing the light color, I think standard halogen color is the most pleasant headlight color.
