I just found this forum recently and made a few posts talking about how my 2003 had never given me any problems, never been to the shop, and I was glad to find a forum where there were other folks who had also had good luck with their's
So today, I change the oil and both fuel filters.....
Truck ran fine for a few minutes then began to skip and shut off. This happened to me in that past and a buddy told me I probably had an air lock. I opened the frame filter just a little (messy), secured it and, yep, she started right up. Today, I thought, OK, I know what to do. Not so...I unscrewed the frame filter a little, till fuel spilled out on me, then secured it. Tried to crank'r up, but, no go.
Any suggestions?
I did take to top off the engine filter to see if there was fuel in there, and there was maybe an inch in the bottom if that much.
Hope I didn't screw anything up.
I'll torque to spec's tomorrow and see if that was the problem. I've always tightened both caps to hand tight and then another 1/4 turn. maybe that's the problem. Then I'll check for the air bubbles.
thanks for the tips and I'll let you know if it works.
did you guys change out the OEM drain plug for the updated version that is supposed to make it a little easier/neater to drain?

I guess if it was just my armpit, maybe I'd be OK!
Funny thing is I wear those rubber surgical gloves and my hands are always the only thing not soaked in Diesel. I'm overly optimistic every time.
All good now, I hope!
I got up this morning and decided to just start from scratch and rechange the fuel filters. I took someones advice and used a plastic trash bag to remove the primary filter. It worked pretty well, with much less fuel running down my arm.
Anyways, I don't know what I did different, but, she stumbled a little while getting the first gulps of fuel, then smoothed out.
One thing different that I did notice, is my water sensor is not going off like it should, but, there can't be any H2O in there, cause I just drained it. It was not doing this prior the changing the filters.
You DID cycle the key a few times before you started it right? I've never had it stumble after changing fuel filters, and there's no need to push air through the injectors like that. Unnecessary wear and tear.
It's not just me saying it, it's straight from Ford's paperwork:

I'll second the WIF solution. You have an accumulation of debris in the drain area of the HFCM. Remove the drain plug and water sensor. Spray the probe of the sensor with brake cleaner to remove debris. Leave filter in place. I used about 30 q-tips and reached into the drain hole, one at a time, and pulled as much crap out as I could. Then I used brake cleaner through the sensor hole to blow out anything left. Then more q-tips. Rinse and repeat. Allow time for brake cleaner to evaporate before reinstalling sensor and plug. My trash came from filling up from the tank on my farm, which wasn't supposed to be put in this truck. (Farmhand) I've had to do it twice so far about 25,000 miles between cleanings. Hoping it's over.
