Bed wood

Here is a company that sells bed wood for our trucks. Don't look unless your ready for sticker shock. Some of the exotic woods are exotically expensive. It was a neat idea though. The company is about an hour and a half from where I live.

I don't know if they do good business but the variety of options for bed wood made good conversation at our house.

I saw there display at the SEMA show for the last two years and actually purchased my hidden fastner stainless strips from them. Good service and not disappointed with their product. I did not buy their bedwood because I thought that I was going to save a few bucks by getting it elsewhere and I did. However I did learn about the quality of the product between the low dollar suppliers and Bed Wood and Parts. Their wood is ready to install with light sanding and custom fit, no planer marks to sand out or other defects. If your building a custom high dollar show truck I would put them at the top of the list and would buy from them if I ever built another truck.

Checked out the Black Walnut I'm using - they want $1100 for it

I paid $4 a board foot so for $250 I got enough to do the bed and rails. I did have to sand and cut it but also got to pick out each board I wanted from a large stock pile. I'll do the work to save $900 !! Any one wants any I have the contact, send me a PM -it is our local church fund raiser so it is even tax deductible

It takes me about 1 hour to mill it up and cut the grooves. Pretty easy stuff.

It's only easy stuff if you have the tooling or access to the tooling. Add the cost of a planer, table saw, dado head, belt sander, finish sander, abrasives and blades and that which might be easy may not be to cost effective to do one or two truck beds.

I agree but I did mine with a belt sanded and router -- took a lot longer than 1 hour but still a lot cheaper than the $900 difference in cost. I still have final sanding and finishing to go but it's getting there and I actually enjoyed doing the wood work- something new to me. Have fun.

Several years ago, I bought an oak bed wood kit (including the mounting hardware, but less the dividers) from Carpenter for a 1954 F100: $350.00.

The wood was pre rabbeted, ready to install once the finish was applied. Using a badger brush, put 6 coats of marine spar varnish above, 8 coats below, sanding between each coat.

Then sprayed 3 coats of polyurethane on top the varnish, sanding between each coat. Truck belongs to a friend, hasn't been inside a garage since Carter was prez.

Friend has a garage, but has a '23 T Touring on one side, '29 A Tudor on the other. '34 Desoto Airflow sedan sits in the driveway under a car cover, raspy '37 Pontiac coupe, '71 Buick Rivera and the truck are parked adjacent.

I haven't seen it recently, it was Ferd Berful's daily driver for 29 years, now needs a valve grind (it's a 223), so he's driving the Model A.

FTE member Jake08 (Ron) has a similar truck, it's beautifully restored, but it rarely leaves the garage. I think Ron's afraid a bird might poop on it.

I put Ron in touch with Ferd (who has no computer). Ron was amazed when Ferd told him he drives his truck every day and from West LA to Lake Havasu twice a year.

btw: I told Ferd I could get him a rebuilt head, we could R&R it in a few hours. "Oh no...don't want a rebuilt, want the original head fixed."

He'll do it, when he gets around to it...might be 20 years, though.

I used Bed Wood & Parts. They were very nice and easy to deal with. I didn't get the wood from them. Did the pick out my own boards thing. I did get the stainless steel strips from them. They punched the square holes exactly where I needed them and all worked out good. Like the OP said though....buying kit wood will make your eyes pop out. Mine at least.
