Hey guys I'm sorry for such a delay on this response but I called Bob from dieselsite who helped me out big time. I explained what was going on and he was running through a few things with me and than he said it could be the external bypass valve on the cooler lines failed and now the fluid is not circulating into the cooler it's just going out and back in to the trans. So I picked one up at my local dealer changed it out and she's back to normal temps. Thank you again for everyone's hero and thank you to Bob for taking my call later that night and helping me out with the problem.
I have had good luck rebuilding the pressure bypass tube with the Sonnax kit. http://www.sonnax.com/parts/2078 I followed the instructions and vacuum tested it to check the seal.
Yup, Roland. I'll bet that $13 for the rebuild kid (not to mention the subsequent higher reliability of a Sonnax part) was much cheaper than a complete bypass assembly.
But was the outside temp the same as it was before he changed the valve? An another question, what is the max temp of this fluid before we have to worry when towing? I was thinking 250 for a short time, is that correct? My son asked me and I wasn't sure.
IIRC 250* isn't deadly, depends more on how long it stays that hot. Plus I would question why it's running that hot. Mine last summer towing a 12k lb 5th wheel stayed around 190ish, never over 210.
Thanks for the tip on the Sonnax parts Roland. Good to know.
My trans runs cool also. But the son with his 5R110 in his 04 6.0L and was asking me because he tows 15 to 16K threw the desert and up the pass. He runs synthetic fluid but he got a scan guage this year and was going to watch it and see where it goes. His can get around 210 in the heat just around town.
The 5R110 will not run as cool as the older transmissions. It has a thermostat that only allows 10% of the normal flow to the coolers when the trans is below 165°F.
