Because my tranny has over 160k on it, I'll be installing an external transmission filter soon, so if the tranny does fail, the clutch material and metal particles won't be able to get to the oil cooler. As an added benefit after I change the filter, I can open it up to see what's inside, so it may also serve as an early warning system.
Questions: did anyone install an aftermarket oil filter? If yes, whose? Is there, or should there be any significant difference between spin on transmission, and engine oil filters? I did a quick search and found this: http://www.alamomotorsports.com/pmc/Cat_page25.html -- it looks good except the $13 - $14 for a replacement filter. Not sure how that filter is different from regular oil filters, but I have a feeling the main difference could be in the markings on the filter, and in the $10 markup in price.
TIA

im running an external filter on my truck, i have it setup to go from the trans to the filter to the B&M 16K cooler then to the stock cooler in the rad. i bought a filter adpater from summit, TRD-1028, its $13. then i got 2x 1/2" to 3/8" brass reducers, and 2x 3/8" brass hose barbs from home depot. im using a FL1A filter. i have my filter on for around 10K miles now and it still gets hot so its not bypassing yet(do to the motorcraft's placement of the bypass valve at the top)
Thanks for the reply. I compared the pictures of the brackets, and they may actually be the same, but the summit bracket costs less than perma-cool filter itself.
I had the exact same setup as 84-250 on my 84 F-250 4x4, just on the other side bolted to the battery bracket where the emissions can was. I ran a Wix filter with a magnet wrapper on it, nothing ever showed up in it other than a little powder on the magnet. It worked quite well, and allows you to run an open mesh pickup screen in the tranny for better flow. It also adds another quart of ATF capacity to the system for cooler fluid.
Mount a remote filter, hard pipe no rubber to fail, install a long filter, 7" like Hastings 426 (Fram 977A), they both hold one quart. Install a magnet inside the filter plus a disc magnet inside the pan. Metal dust will be on the magnet, the filter will catch aluminum and clutch material vs the screen they pass thru. All this is best done on a new or rebuilt system after all lines have been flushed. What about a axxiliary cooler? A little late after 160,000 miles. Like breast implants on grandma, she's 94. Sorry.
